A Neglected Alley Back To Life.
Kwai Chai Hong is currently one of the most popular tourist spots in Kuala Lumpur. It is located in the Chinatown area which is in between two roads of Jalan Petaling and Lorong Panggung, a history-rich lane with restored pre-war buildings. The name of Kwai Chai Hong means “Little Demon Alley” or “Ghost Lane” if translating from the Cantonese dialect.

Before the renovation, the lane was in a very dilapidated state, infested with roaches and rodents. It was also a hideout for some homeless individuals. A team called Bai Chuan Management behind this project saw the business opportunity and decided to turn it into a different place that is full of art, heritage and culture.

Before you get it into the lane, there are some modern shops and cafes at the outside. Yet, they still remained the vintage look. You will be amazed once you pass through the red arch and bridge. The murals present the daily routines of Chinese settlers in the old days gathered and stayed in the 1960s. It helps foreign visitors to understand how they used to live. Most importantly, the younger generations can experience it, not only listening to the older people.

The murals were painted by five local artists: Khek Shin Nam, Chan Kok Sing, Chok Fook Yong, Chew Weng Yeow and Wong Leck Min, with Chang noting that their different painting styles and brushstrokes reflected the diversity of the Chinese community itself. If you have the opportunity to visit the place, please come here to have a look and experience the glorious old days by yourself.
